Well, now we all should have one, but we don't. At the very least a garden in the yard could really be a great way to save money & eat healthier.
Wether its big or small or you are living in an apartment, having a green house or garden is an exciting and rewarding hobby, no matter how old or young. There is many excuses as to not growing crops, complaints like having a small space or living in a climate that isn't right to what you want to grow.
There are Plenty of ideas for for both small living spaces and ways of growing just about anything indoors.
Now more than ever people would benifit from having one. Its a great activity to do with the whole family, you'll achieve pride and have something to brag about at work school or outings. And just think of the lovely platters of colorful fresh edible things you can put on a platter without having to run to the store and buy it overpriced.
The Roman emperor Tiberius (AD 14-37) ate a cucumber-like vegetable daily. The meditranian environment however didn't always have the proper climate for this type of vegtable to be grown year round. And this emperor insisted he have one daily.
So his gardeners used to grow their cucumbers in large carts that could be wheeled outdoors in sunny weather and brought inside again at night or when it was cold. Not a complete answer, because long cold spells might mean the plants were kept indoors for days on end and would fail from lack of light. So the gardeners covered the carts with translucent panes that let in light but kept out the worst of the chills, and the plants could be outdoors even in cold weather.
The covers were made of selenite, a form of gypsum which was soft enough to be easily cut into very thin sheets, yet hard enough to serve as quite large panes. And it definitely worked.
When you want to grow plants in a controlled environment. This environment enables faster and healthy growth of plants no matter the season.
As you contemplate getting one, it’s worth noting that different types of greenhouses are ideal for different purposes, plants and situations.
For this reason, the type of greenhouse you choose will primarily depend on your specific needs. And, some will work better in some situations than others.
Generally speaking, there are three types of greenhouses: lean-to, detached, and ridge and furrow or gutter connected. Few lean-to greenhouses are used for commercial production because of limitations in size. This type of house is the most popular umongst hobbiests.
Getting a greenhouse can be an extremely fulfilling experience, one sure to provide hours of enjoyment for you and your whole family. Plus, think of all the possible snacks for you, your friends, your family, and your neighbors! The different types of greenhouses can be confusing, but just keep in mind it should be one that’ll help accentuate your green thumb, right? Another factor worth considering is, can you optimize the space? You’ll have a lot of headspace that you can either take advantage of, or waste. Might recommend some vertical gardening or a hanging terrarium to take care of that otherwise unused space. These are ways of gardening without a green house, but are rather a practical method of growing vedgtables you enjoy in the space you have, in an apartment with a balcony, while also providing a bit of shade and privacy. Today about 92% of plants, raised by man, are grown in the open field. Since the beginning of agriculture, farmers have had to cope with the growing conditions given to them by Mother Nature. In some of the temperate regions where the climatic conditions are extremely adverse and no crops can be grown, man has developed technological methods of growing some high value crops by providing protection from the excessive cold and excessive heat. This is called Greenhouse Technology.
“Greenhouse Technology is the science of providing favourable environment conditions to the plants”. That being said, It also protects the plants from the adverse climatic conditions such as wind, cold, precipitation, excessive radiation, extreme temperature, insects and diseases. So, An ideal micro climate can be created around the plants. Greenhouses are framed or inflated structures covered with transparent or translucent material large enough to grow crops under partial or full controlled environmental conditions to get optimum growth and productivity.
There are a great number of types and varieties of plants that grow naturally in the most diverse climate conditions that have been transferred by modern agriculture from their natural habitats to controlled crop conditions. Therefore, conditions similar to the natural ones must be created for each type and variety of plant. Each type of cultivated plant must be given the specific type of shade required for the diverse phases of its development. The shading nets fulfil the task of giving appropriate micro-climate conditions to the plants. Shade nettings are designed to protect the crops and plants from UV radiation, but they also provide protection from climate conditions, such as temperature variation, intensive rain and winds. Better growth conditions can be achieved for the crop due to the controlled micro-climate conditions “created” in the covered area, with shade netting, which results in higher crop yields. All nettings are UV stabilized to fulfil expected lifetime at the area of exposure. They are characterized of high tear resistance, low weight for easy and quick installation with a 30-90% shade value range. A wide range of shading nets are available in the market which is defined on the basis of the percentage of shade they deliver to the plant growing under them.
Either way, there are a multiple of ideas when building or, buying a greenhouse and if a garden is something you want to start this year, an indoor small green house is a fantastic purchase to get you seedling started.
Plant seeds, Water, sunshine and before you know it you'll have an abundance of fresh healthy food.
